Novak Djokovic won his sixth Italian Open championship on Sunday, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (7/5) in Rome. Djokovic defeated Monte Carlo Masters winner Tsitsipas to win the final major title before Roland Garros begins later this month. The 34-year-old won his first event of the season, confirming his return to form following a season overshadowed by the Covid-19 immunization issue.
The match on Sunday was a replay of the pair’s final at last year’s French Open, but it lacked the intensity of that five-set thriller, which the Serb finally won in Paris.
Djokovic had already secured the world number one ranking for a record-extending 370th week when he defeated Casper Ruud in the final on Saturday night.
And he dispatched Greece’s Tsitsipas, who had also reached the semi-finals of last week’s tournament in Madrid and continues to lead the men’s circuit in victories this season.
