Valencia has named Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach.

Valencia’s new coach, Gennaro Gattuso, was unveiled on Thursday by the La Liga club. The 44-year-old, who most recently led Napoli, will take over for Jose Bordalas, who was fired by the club last week. Gattuso has also coached AC Milan, where he was a combative midfielder for 13 years, and Napoli, where he won the Italian Cup in 2020.

“Football is enthusiasm, respect for the game, and love for the ball,” Gattuso stated in a video uploaded on social media by Valencia.

“I understand what it’s like to be terrified of Valencia. Great teams have fallen in this (Mestalla) stadium, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this season.”

Gattuso’s contract is just for the next two seasons.

He was fired as Napoli manager at the end of the 2020-21 season after a home draw with Verona in the last game saw them miss out on a Champions League spot by a single point to Juventus.

Gattuso will be Valencia’s tenth coach since controversial owner Peter Lim acquired the club eight years ago.

Valencia finished ninth in La Liga last season and lost on penalties to Real Betis in the Copa del Rey final.
