Angelo Mathews, a former captain, has been awarded the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for May 2022.Mathews won the prize ahead of pacer Asitha Fernando and Bangladesh great Mushfiqur Rahim.
Mathews was outstanding in the two-match series against Bangladesh away from home, finishing as the leading run-scorer with 344 runs, including two hundreds.He came close to a double ton in the first Test at Chattogram, scoring 199.
He struck a superb 145 in the first innings in Sri Lanka’s 10-wicket triumph over the hosts in the second match at Mirpur.The victory propelled Sri Lanka to fourth place in the ICC World Test Championship rankings, with a point percentage of 55.56.
His outstanding performances in the series propelled him to No.15 in the ICC Test Batters Rankings and now to the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award.He is also the first Sri Lankan player to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award since its debut in January 2021.
