The shortest format of cricket will return with a bang this season, with Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Chris Lynn, and David Miller among this year’s Abu Dhabi T10 Icon Player choices.
Bravo has now been retained by the Delhi Bulls, while Lynn is the star of Team Abu Dhabi in the host city. The Bangla Tigers have signed Shakib Al Hasan, Dasun Shanaka has remained with the Chennai Braves, and Wanindu Hasaranga has remained with the Northern Warriors. The defending champions, the Deccan Gladiators, have kept star captain Andre Russell as their Icon Player ahead of their championship defense.
Both the Morrisville SAMP Army and the New York Strikers will make their American debuts this year. Pollard has been awarded the New York Strikers’ Icon Player, while Miller has signed with the Morrisville SAMP Army.
Pollard, one of the most deadly and successful white ball cricketers in history, will join the New York Strikers with England’s 2019 ODI World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan, who clearly means business with their first two picks.
Miller, a recent IPL winner with the Gujarat Titans, is joined as a Platinum player at Morrisville SAMP Army by compatriot – and tearaway fast – Anrich Nortje, with Moeen Ali and Shimron Hetmyer also signed.
“I am thrilled to welcome the Morrisville Samp Army and New York Strikers from the United States to our Abu Dhabi T10 family,” said T10 Sports Management Chairman Shaji Ul Mulk. Our goal for the league was to make the Abu Dhabi T10 one of the outstanding events on the international cricket calendar, as well as to increase our worldwide broadcast audience, which now stands at 342 million. With the inclusion of two more teams from the Americas, we continue to build on the tournament’s success as cricket’s quickest format evolves at a rapid pace across continents.
“I am thrilled to be a part of the T10 experience, and I am looking forward to this season and beyond,” said Sagar Khanna, owner of the New York Strikers. The New York Strikers will put their best foot forward to meet the Abu Dhabi T10’s enthusiasm. We hope that the squad can go all the way, and they will have full managerial support in that endeavor. The Abu Dhabi T10 is one of the finest cricket tournaments on the calendar, and I’m confident that the New York Strikers will add even more color to the competition.”
The Abu Dhabi T10 is a one-of-a-kind, highly competitive event that attracts the top players from across the world. It provides us with an excellent opportunity to compete against some of the top players in the world and put our skills to the test. Along with the six previous teams, two new sides from the United States have joined the fray,With the addition of the New York Strikers and the Morrisville SAMP Army, there will be an eight-team extravaganza with a 10-overs-per-side competition.
The first Icon and Platinum Player picks, as well as the retention picks, brought a lot of star power to the eight organizations. On September 26 in Abu Dhabi, the official player draft for the 2022 event will take place, with each team required to select three UAE players and one International Emerging player.
Cricket’s fastest format attracted 342 million broadcast and over-the-top (OTT) internet viewers in 2021, resulting in an 81% increase in sponsorship values. Meanwhile, viewership surged by 135% compared to the previous episode.
The competition will be structured so that each of the eight teams will only meet each other once – a single round robin. The top four qualifying teams will progress to the play-offs, which will consist of two qualifiers and one eliminator to determine the last two teams.
