Multiple records are broken by Dewald Brevis in a massive inning at the CSA T20 Challenge.

In the CSA T20 Challenge on Monday, October 31, teenage batting prodigy Dewald Brevis set a record for the highest T20 score by a South African player with a knock that included 26 boundaries.

The 19-year-old scored 162 runs for the Titans at Potchefstroom, which is tied for the third-highest T20 score ever. He also had the best strike rate of any player above him, clocking in at 284.21.

Beginning the innings cautiously with a single, Brevis then launched his attack, hitting two fours off the last two balls of Mbulelo Budaza’s opening over.

Six over in, his true acceleration began. He scored a six off the free hit while taking advantage of a no ball to score 24 off of Jacques Snyman. Brevis entered the top ten quickest 100 scorers in T20 cricket with his maiden fifty coming off just 18 deliveries, and it took him just one more delivery to achieve the three-figure milestone.

Brevis had impressive potential that many first witnessed for South Africa in the U-19 World Cup, when he was the tournament’s leading run scorer. His technique and six-hitting prowess throughout his historic innings were those of someone much more seasoned and renowned.

He was able to take advantage of any sloppy bowling by remaining motionless at the wicket and keeping his head firmly over the ball. As he carried the ball around the stadium, he demonstrated why he has been likened to AB de Villiers.

Brevis added another six to put the total up to 150*, becoming just the 14th batsman in T20 cricket to accomplish the milestone, 17 more balls after reaching his hundred. Brevis was ultimately sent back to the pavilion two balls after being caught off a waist-high no-ball by Patrick Kruger off Gerald Coetzee.

He finished the innings with 13 sixes, the most of any South African T20 batsman and the joint-most of any South African. The Titans recorded the fourth-highest T20 total ever as well as the second-highest score in a domestic match when they concluded their innings three wickets behind with 271 on the scoreboard.

The Knights never stood a chance of winning when they entered the batting order, but they put out an impressive performance by reaching 230, possibly highlighting the flatness of the pitch and caliber of bowling available from both sides.

The 501 runs scored in the contest are the highest total ever for a T20 game, and both teams combined for the third-most number of sixes.

Brevis also contributed on the field, dismissing Coetzee with a superb grab on the boundary. Brevis sprang into the air as the ball was about to go over the rope for a six, tugging the ball back over the rope before leaping forward to grab the catch on the bounce, a catch that would have been amazing in and of itself if he hadn’t just played the innings of his life. With his final ball of the day, he completed his all-around effort by dismissing Migael Pretorius.
